Long answer:Binaural beats are unique "auditory artifacts" that are "heard" only in the
brain. Binaural beats alter the dominant brainwave frequency of the mind in a process researchers call
frequency follows response. By altering ones brainwave frequencies one may effectively go into what has been
labeled as an alpha, theta, beta, gamma or delta state. Each brain state has been associated with a different
state of consciousness; for example, generally the alpha state is associated with relaxation and calmness, and
delta is associated with healing deep sleep.
Binaural beats are produced when two tones of slightly different frequencies are played separately in each ear. When the brain comes into contact with two slightly different tones a binaural beat is produced that is the average and difference between the two original tones. For example, a 100 Hz tone and a 110 Hz tone will form a 105 Hz tone pulsating 10 times per second. One may effectively "hear" a binaural beat, with the aid of stereo headphones, by playing two similar tones in each ear. By altering the tone in each ear a new binaural beat may be heard.

I get asked this question quite a lot actually, and it really depends on your own beliefs. I find binaural beats to be extremely effective for me and do not place any judgments on my method. I treat this technology as just one tool in my meditation toolbox. I can choose to meditate with binaural beats whenever I like. In fact the more I use binaural beats the more I don't need to use them. After some time of using them I find that I am able to go into the same brain states without using my binaural beats. Binaural beats have a nice in that they are anti-habit forming; that is, the more one uses binaural beats the more your brain develops new neuro-connections. After these connections become strong and permanent, which mean that you actually don't need to use binaural beats to achieve the same functioning of the mind.
